Contact with chemicals

Constant contact with chemical is also supposed to be a cause of Vitiligo. Some chemicals, particularly photography chemicals, such as Phenols, can trigger vitiligo in those who are susceptible. Phenols can also be found in many types of hair colorings, household stains, and similar products. There are other industrial chemicals and substances which may also trigger the onset of vitiligo.

Also the large number of occurrence of Vitiligo in people belonging to certain geographic areas in the vicinity of industries especially of dyes and plastics has proved this theory. Chemicals such as Thiols, Phenols, Catechols, Mercaptoamines, Quinones and their derivatives have time and again been found to be the common offenders. They may cause depigmentation and loss of melanin in melanocytes either by inhibiting tyrosinase or by their direct cytotoxic affects on melanocytes.
